Who we are:

The National Organization for Women is the grassroots arm of the women’s movement. We are the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of thousands of contributing members and more than 250 local and campus affiliates across the country. Since our founding in 1966, NOW’s goal has been “to take action” to bring about equality for all women. Both the actions NOW takes and its position on the issues are principled, uncompromising and often ahead of their time. NOW is a leader, not a follower, of public opinion.

How we use Status of Women in the States:

We are a multi-issue, multi-strategy organization that takes a holistic approach to women’s rights. Because of this, we rely on women-specific reports, like the Status of Women in the States, to identify economic, social, and political trends on the national, state, and local levels and determine where we would have the most impact. The data provided in Status of Women in the States will serve as a feminist leadership recruitment tool through the establishment of local and state chapters and campus affiliates in states where the economic and social status of women is worse compared to the national average. NOW will utilize the data and findings to perform extensive electoral and lobbying work in order to enact legislation and push for social change. Having state-specific data will increase the effectiveness of our message when meeting with state and local elected officials.  NOW Foundation will also incorporate information from Status of Women in the States in its in-depth policy reports.
