Other studies found half of all households in the South have a woman as the primary breadwinner, meaning at least 40 percent of the home’s income comes from the mother, according to The Status of Women in the South.

The study further contends that the poverty rate among Southern women would fall by more than half from 9.4 percent to 4.6 percent if women were paid comparable wages to men.
