Women are routinely underrepresented in America’s political landscape, and Utah County is no exception.
Of the elected positions in Utah County, including city councils, mayors and county officials, only about 14 percent are filled by women.
That 14 percent is comprised entirely of city councilwomen, as all 22 mayors and 12 county elected officials in Utah County are men, according to data from the respective county and city websites.
It’s not just Utah County that is short on women politicians. Out of 104 Utah state legislators, only 17 are women, according to a 2014 study done by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.
Out of the 50 states, the study ranks Utah 45th based on the number of women in the state legislature.
