The southern United States is a dynamic and influential region marked by innovation and economic opportunities for women, yet it is also a region where inequalities persist and many women—especially women of color and those who are immigrants—face challenges such as high unemployment, a large gender wage gap, abuse of their reproductive rights, and low levels of political representation.

What can be done to speed up the pace of progress for women in the South? The Institute for Women’s Policy Research first ever Status of Women in the South report is the first report to provide a comprehensive portrait of the status of women, particularly the status of women of color, in the southern United States, grading each state on six different topic areas related to women’s economic, political, health, and social status.

This webinar will feature IWPR Research Associate Julie Anderson, who will give an overview of the key findings from the report, with a particular focus on policy recommendations for advancing the economic, health, and political power of women in the South. The full report also features spotlights on special population groups in the South, including Millennial women, older women, immigrant women, rural women, LGBT women, and women with disabilities.
