You may have already seen the awesome news in Glamour that women ages 25 to 34 in New York are now earning two cents more an hour than their male peers, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR). One major reason for the closed pay gap: Women in New York tend to start their families later—around age 27 or 28. In Wyoming, where women make just 72 cents for every dollar men make, the average age of a woman having her first baby is 23. That doesn’t mean women should put off having children just to protect their salaries—but it does mean there’s something seriously wrong with our system when becoming a mom has a direct negative impact on a woman’s earnings. (Men, on the other hand, see a boost in salary after becoming fathers.)
