Who we are:
The American Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.
Our members are teachers, healthcare professionals, school employees, college faculty, graduate students, public employees and retirees; many work in sectors largely dominated by women. Many are also mothers and wives, heads of working families striving for dignity on the job and justice for their communities. The AFT recognizes that our labor movement depends on the strength of all workers, and that we must work to build leaders among the women in our ranks.
How we use Status of Women in the States:
IWPR’s Status of Women in the States gives AFT the analytical resources it needs to more effectively drive policy that improves our members’ social, political and economic conditions. The report’s research informs how we as a labor movement can better fight for the needs of our members and of working families everywhere. We are particularly interested in the section on the Union Advantage for Women that interprets the impact of unionization on women’s economic security.
